The same as all cities in Laos, there is a Morning market selling fresh meat, vegetables, and other food ingredients. Souvenirs such as silk, silverwares, jewelry, antiques and hill tribe products can be found at the stalls located around most of the sights in Champasak market. When travelling in Champasak, do not forget to try (or even buy) famous Lao Arabica coffee which grown in the highlands Bolovens (east of Pakse is the best place to grow coffee in Southeast Asia).
Dao Heuang (New Market)
A large market considering as the small size of the city is located on road 13 near the Japanese Bridge over the Mekong River. These new markets provide everything from fresh food to metal items. The market is well organized and is divided into areas such as clothing, silver, regional and accessories, and food. Definitely a best shopping store in Champasak. Dao Heuang (New Market) is about two kilometers southeast from the city.
Buyers should note that Champasak is not a big tourism city and so it is better to learn some of Laotian or at least have a computer with you because you can only get a friendly smile , a smile from the supplier when requesting price. There is an ATM machine in Pakse (yes – only a) accept international cards. Despite the limited amount per transaction, one can draw an unlimited number of times, but when the machine is empty can be maintained so long as a week.
It is about 200 metres from the south of town center. Morning Market Pakse sells fruits and vegetables grown in the backside of the locals and also sells clothing, crafts, silverwares, and household items. Although the transfer price is high, it is not expensive. Some food stalls in the surrounding area offer coffee and Laos beer and this is definitely a perfect place to rest after a tiring morning shopping.
